Each of the brochures is aimed at a specific branch of a railroad accounting department. The Burroughs Adding Machine Company designed mechanical calculating machines specially adapted to railroad accounting needs and established its own Railroad Department, the purpose of which was "to get in very close touch with the accounting of the railroads of the United States and Canada" and to advise railroads how Burroughs machines could be used to effect shortcuts in accounting.
