Sport and adventure in the west and Alaska by Madison Grant (1865-1937). This is a collection of brief tales - vignettes, almost- consisting of dialogues between the Major, a New York sportsman, and Hank, a salt-of-the-earth homespun character who appears in various guises, mostly as the Major's guide and companion on big game hunting expeditions in the American and Canadian Far West. Hank's learning is limited, ("you ride like a centipede--one of those old fellows that was half man and half horse"), but he's good company.
Grant was a wealthy New York lawyer whose major interests were zoology and ethnology; he was a founder and president of the New York Zoological Society (he was instrumental in developing the Bronx Zoo and the Bronx River Parkway to get there), a member of the Boone and Crockett Club and a contributor to its publications, and a pioneer in conservation who helped save California's redwoods. He was also a promulgator of immigration restriction, and helped to frame the Johnson Act which imposed the basic quota system. Among his books are The Passing of the Great Race (1916) and The Conquest of a Continent (1933). Biscotti cites a 1931 edition of 114 pp., this edition "reported, slightly different format"). Uncommon. Biscotti p. 275 (this edition not seen by him) (Inventory #: 316708)
