The result of years of experimentation this book is landmark and an engineering classic. Because of the great difficulties encountered with the pier foundations of the Souillac bridge Vicat undertook these experiments. The book is divided into three parts. The first deals with the production of artificial lime. The second covers hydraulic mortars and their use in concrete, and setting and hardening of the compounds. The third part is a comparison of hydraulic and ordinary mortars with detailed results of tests displayed and tabulated. The book was the final word in the understanding and application of hydraulic limes and cements; replacing the failed hit-and-miss approach of practical experience.
