By La Grange, Louis
Boston: Printed by Rand, Avery, & Co, 1872. Duodecimo (17 x 11 cm.), [4], 3-69, [1] pages. FIRST & ONLY EDITION. A collection of prescriptions, formulae, and receipts, gathered by the author for the use of the traveler. "The language is in plain English, so that every person can go into the woods and pastures, and collect roots and herbs suited to his disease; or they can be obtained at the apothecaries'" (Preface). The recipes are organized by malady – not by herb or root – and so the work is not technically an herbal, but the spirits remains, and the image of the dyspeptic coach passenger foraging by the roadside illumines what must have been a common need for self-treatment still at that late date. Printed, paper covered boards over brown cloth spine. Some light soiling to covers and to text block. Near very good. Rare. [OCLC locates one copy (AAS)].
