by PARTON, James
New York: Mason Brothers, 1864. Hardcover. 8vo. Brown pebble-grained cloth with gilt spine lettering. 661pp, (1p ad). Two frontispieces, 2 maps. Very good. Binding gently edgeworn; bit of foxing and age toning to frontispieces; large ownership signature/city on front flyleaf and inner flyleaf. A tight and nice later (11th) printing of this bestselling account (first published the year prior) of the controversial Union general -- with choice autograph addition: Tipped to front flyleaf is a bold signature of Parton in brown ink on a 2 3/4" X 1ΒΌ" slip with "1870" penned beneath in another hand. Very good. Parton (1822-91) was an English-born American journalist who became the most popular biographer of his day by somewhat fictionalizing his subjects and making them enjoyable, cranking out (among others) biographies of Horace Greeley (1855), Aaron Burr (1857), Andrew Jackson (1859-60), Benjamin Franklin (1864), Thomas Jefferson (1874) and Voltaire (1881).
