by Steinbeck, John
Firenze: Valentino Bompiani, 1943. Paperback. 239p., wartime printing (the Milano issue a year earlier), softbound in 8x4.5 decorated wraps and a color-decorated dust jacket. Not a bad copy but quite acidic and toned, with outermost leaves fragile, find tiny marginal tears to early and terminal pages. Cover of book itself is also very toned and a tad fragile. The dj was printed on better paperstock, there's a little foxing along joint-folds, serious top-edge wear with small chips to the head, recto dust-soil, but colors are fast and no damage to flap-texts. All things considered (like WW Two) a good copy. One wonders did Vittorini do the translation while in prison? he'd published an anti-fascist novel in 1941 that put him behind bars.
