Written as a history for the State Historical Society on the occasion of the 300th anniversary of the grant of the Province of Maine to Sir Ferdinando Gorges and Captain John Mason, September 21, 1922. The address did not occur to the Historical Society as planned because of an accident sustained by the author, but was postponed until May 31, 1923. The account covers Rosier's relation of Waymouth's voyage of 1605,
the Popham Company experiences, Captains John Smith and Thomas Dermer, as well as the grant of the province.
