Paris: J.-B. Bailliere et Fils, 1859. Volume I of two. Octavo, quarter calf & marbled boards (hardcover, leather). Engraved plates. Good; lacks spine labels, front joint very tender. “Thre greatest physiologist of modern France.” -- Garrison, Morton-Garrison 1234.1. “This work covers the physiology and pathology of blood and other body fluids.” -- Heirs of Hippocrates, 1796. “Bernard’s series of lectures on the liquids of the organism contains his first usage of the expression ‘milieu’ to express a controlled and constant internal environment (i.e., the blood) mediating between the life of the organism and its external enviornment. This fundamental physiological concept, for which he later coined the term ‘milieu interieure,’ would become as valuable to physiology as Darwin’s theory of evolution was to biology. The work also presents Bernard’s fourth and last major discovery in the field of animal experimentation: that blood supply of secretory organs such as glands is regulated by vasomotor and vasoconstrictor nerves, which respond to the presence or absence of stiumlus in the organ.” - Norman 203.
