By CAVERNO, Charles
Boston: Sherman, French & Company, 1914. First Edition. Lengthy hand-written letter from Caverno tipped to the front endpaper: “Lombard, Illinois, Aug. 23, 1916. Professor John C. Van Dyke, Button Woods, White Mts., New Hampshire. Your letter of the 20th gives me much pleasure. Thank you heartily for it. I have ordered sent to you by mail at New Brunswick, NJ a copy of my `Reminiscences of the Eulogy of Rufus Choate on Daniel Webster.’ When you have read that, if you wish, you may write on the fly leaf- `Presented to John C. Van Dyke by the Author C. Caverno’ and we will consider the ceremonies of introduction fairly passed. Most cordially, Charles Caverno.” John Charles Van Dyke [1856–1932] was an American art historian and critic. He was born at New Brunswick, NJ, studied at Columbia University and for many years in Europe. He was admitted to the New York State Bar Association in 1877 but never practiced law. In 1878, Van Dyke was appointed the librarian of the Gardner Sage Library and the New Brunswick Theological Seminar and, in 1891, as a professor of art history at Rutgers College (now University). Small 8vo., green cloth stamped in gilt; 51 pages. Very Good (covers nice & bright; contents clean & tight; few folds but letter is in very nice condition).
