San Francisco: CUAV, 1996. Unbound. Near Fine. A collection of 28 flyers, brochures, broadside and cards of the San Francisco action group Community United Against Violence (CUAV). Various size sheets of different colors, some printed both sides and folding to make several pages; plus, one sticker. Overall near fine with wear from being distributed, posted or mailed, such as creases, tack holes or tape remnants. CUAV was formed in San Francisco in 1979 in the wake of the assassinations of Harvey Milk and George Moscone, to help protect LGBT resident of the Castro District from violence. The program began with a safety whistle campaign as a way to help those being attack and to alert others to step in, but it would later add domestic violence to its mission after being confronted with numerous calls to its emergency hotline. CUAV is still active today and remains the oldest LGBTQ anti-violence in American. These flyers and brochures include announcements of gay bashing, images of people who were attacked, announcements of community meetings and self-defense classes, hotline numbers, and tips to help prevent domestic violence.
