A collection of Mr. Dooley pieces, the current "Mr. Dooley in Peace and in War," was published in book form in 1898 to great acclaim. Allegedly, it became popularin the US so quickly, a number of British publishers pirated the book and released it in Great Britain to another great success. In fact, in 1899, Dunne dedicated his second book - "Mr. Dooley in the Hearts of His Countrymen" - "To Sir George Newnes, Bart, Messrs. George Routledge and Sons, Limited, and other publishers who uninvited presented Mr. Dooley to a part of the British public."
