SKETCH BOOK by HENRY ELLIS MATTSON Containing Twenty-Eight full Watercolors, created 1940–1942, mostly in North Carolina and Florida (two identified as Coney Island and also Rondout, NY). Drawn on [50] pages, mostly titled and dated, with additional notations. Ring-bound album with stiff buff covers with original watercolor pasted label, inscribed "Florida, N.C. '41".
Henry Mattson [1877–1971] was a Swedish-born American artist who came to Worcester, MA and studied at the Worcester Museum evening sketch classes in 1913, went back to Sweden to puruse his painting career, but came back three years later, settling in Woodstock, NY. Best known for his romantic landscapers, marine and night scenes. Tthough self-taught, he was quite a successful artist.
