Nineteenth century quarter calf over marbled boards, retaining original backstrip. tooling and ruling on spine; raised bands. Four engraved title pages. Copperplate engraved title; main title in red and black with publisher's device; three ornate copperplate engraved half-title pages; decorative initials and endpieces, one for the Major Prophets, one for the Minor Prophets and one for the Writings. Also contains a b/w illustrated half title-page and a full title page, printed in black and red, with a small engraving of Moses and Aaron dressed as the High Priest, overlooking the Tabernacle in the Sinai desert. Tail pieces. Engraved Latin initials. Set in 5 sizes of Sephardic Hebrew type.

Second edition of Joseph Athias' and Johannes Leusden's famous quarto Hebrew Bible of 1666-67. Contains Masoretic notes, as well as the corrections of the Daniel Bomberg, Robert Estienne, Christophe Plantin editions. Exquisitely adorned with various illustrative notes by Everardo van der Hooght, V.D.M. Opens with Hooght's scholarly preface in Latin, followed by 10 pages of praises for the new edition, from various scholars and professors, including Johannes Braun and Adriaan Reland. The text, versified in both Hebrew and Arabic numerals, also contains Hooght's new Latin apparatus to aid Christian scholars. List of appropriate haftarot (order of the additional weekly readings from Prophets) according to Sephardic and Ashkenaz customs, as well as a large index citing textual differences between the Athias, Bomberg and Plantin editions. Preface in Latin, Biblical text in Hebrew, with Latin citations. Text mostly in Hebrew with some Latin. Calf spine with some wear, half inch chipping along head of spine, very light fraying at bottom. Slight cracking at joints, light scuffing of raised bands. Text block starting beginning at Samuel; first text leaf of Isaiah detached and ragged about edges, else a good set. References: Darlow & Moule 5141.
