Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1927. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Fine/Very Good -. An apparently unread copy in used but presentable dustjacket, inscribed by author on the ffe: "To xxxxx from her friend Elsie Signmaster Lewars a souvenir of the visit to Gettyuburg March 22, 1931" Singmaster (1879 - 1958) was a native of Pennsylvania where she set many of her novels geared to the juvenile reader. She won the Newberry Award for"Swords of Steel" in 1934. This inscription noteworthy as it recounts a visit to Gettysburg, where this book, about teh relationship between two young friends as Confederate troops approach for the Civil War's famous battle, is set.
