by Ludewig, Hermann E.
London: Trübner & Co, 1858. First edition, 8vo, pp. xxiv, 258; title page printed in red and black; original black cloth, gilt-stamped on upper cover and spine, t.e.g.; lightly rubbed, but generally a very good, bright copy. This copy with a presentation from editor, Nicholas Trübner: "Mr. Brunet, hommage de l'editeur, N. Trübner." Mr. Brunet is likely Jacques-Charles Brunet, a contemporary of Trübner's whose Manuel du libraire et de l'amateur des livres is still often cited today. An uncommon and excellent reference for language books of native North and South Americans, arranged alphabetically by tribe, with lists of word books, vocabularies, grammars, and grammatical notices for each. A precursor, of sorts, to Pilling's own Proof-sheets. Pilling, Proof-sheets, 2348a; Field 959: "It contains notices of treatises on the languages and dialect spoken by 1030 tribes or by aboriginal peoples, known under as many names; and as a monument of industry is scarcely excelled."
