Originally serialized in The Strand magazine between May and December 1897, this little-remembered novel concerns a group of European tourists who are attacked and abducted by Dervish warriors while traveling in Egypt. It is revealing of late 19th century European attitudes towards Islam, and contains a strong defense of British Imperialism. Doyle later adapted this novel into the play Fires of Fate (1909). With thirty-two full-page illustrations by Sidney Paget. Octavo. Original blue cloth binding, with pictorial blue, green, and tan stamping. The top edge is dust stained. Light wear to the corners and tips, with some general sun fading along the spine; otherwise very good.
