London: T. Cadell and W. Davies, 1809. Third Edition. Hardcover. Very good. Two volumes in one. Extremely popular when it was published, this novel concerns a well-to-do young man who tries to find a wife who can meet the lofty moral requirements laid down by his (now deceased) mother. More (1745-1833) was an English religious writer and philanthropist, remembered as a poet and playwright in the circle of Johnson, Reynolds, and Garrick, as well as a leading Bluestocking member. Octavo. In a one-half brown calf over red pebbled cloth binding, with a brown leather spine label, decorative gilt stamping, five raised bands, and green endpapers. Period bookplate of Sidney Billing of Sunbury, Middlesex to the front pastedown. Minor foxing to the prefatory and concluding leaves, with some general dust staining to the top edge. The spine is moderately darkened, with a bit of scuffing to the extremities; else about very good.
