1930s. Original autograph signature of Belgian poet, biographer, and historian, Emile Cammaerts, inscribed to British autograph collector, L.E.L. Downing, written in vintage fountain pen ink on a 4” x 3” piece of paper. Inscribed: “To L. Downing, sincerely, Emile Cammaerts.” Fine. Emile Cammaerts was born in Belgium in 1878 and moved to England in 1908, where, in addition to his own writing, he translated works of John Ruskin and G. K. Chesterton. Cammaerts is the author of Belgian Poems: Chants Patriotique, et Autres Poems (translated into English by his wife in 1916), Discoveries in England, various books on Belgian history, The Laughing Prophet ( a study of G.K. Chesterton),The Poetry of Nonsense, The Adoration of the Soldiers, Upon This Rock, etc. (Inventory #: 16887E)
