First American edition. Pictorial gray cloth with cover design by Sime in black, gold and light green. Frontispiece also by Sime. Small previous owners signature to front paste-down, lite spot to read board and few small spots to tail of book block, some general wear to extremities with corners bumped and front hinge starting, very good condition. This is one of Sime's earliest appearance in books, having gained his start in magazines. Machan has been compared to a morose G. K. Chesterton…but have darker, less accessible strands. (Nicholls, The Science Fiction Encyclopedia. ) In supernatural fiction, despite small output, the dominate figure of the time just before M. R. James and A. Blackwood (Bleiler, The Guide to Supernatural Fiction. )
