Images date from 1966-1977. Including a photograph of US President Richard Nixon on his historic 1972 state visit to China. Mao and Nixon are shown seated in the middle of an office; Henry Kissinger is the only other American in the image, seated next to the President. Nixon's trip ended 25 years of no communication or diplomatic ties between the two countries and was the key step in normalizing relations between the U.S. and China. Original press caption printed above 1966 image: "Communist Party Chairman Mao Tse-tung (L), appearing in a military uniform for the first time in years, stands beside Red China's Defense Minister, Lin Piao [Biao], during rally in Peking 8/18. Lin's appearance beside Meo heightened speculation hat he has become the number two man in the Chinese Communist hierarchy and Mao's heir-presumptive." Third photo reports on 11th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, and includes press caption in Spanish adhered to verso, likely from Cuba or South America. These original press photo taken by photojournalist within tight timeframe for the benefit of particular editorial board and with the aim of usage by the press to illustrate an article often affected public opinion in the nation.
