Monticello, IL: Pepsin Syrup Co., 1923. First Edition. Very good. First edition, n. d. (ca 1923); 6 3/4 x 4 1/2; pp. 3-22; stapled, lithographed wraps; illustrated with numerous drawings; a light crease and a small nick to fore-edge of front wrap; thin, closed splits to tips of spine; overall in very good condition-. Published as an advertisement for Dr. Caldwell's Syrup Pepsin - the Family Laxative (invented by Dr. William Burr Caldwell around 1885), the booklet featured a treasure trove of helpful advice and admonitions for a healthy living in the early 20th century. Some of the topics included "Watch the Thermometer," "Count the Calories," "Balancing Work, Play, and Sleep," etc. It also featured an extensive exercise chart, a weight chart, and a balanced ration chart. A striking, eye-catching detail of the booklet was the illustration on the front wrap, displaying in profile a running, entirely-naked man, with only a messenger bag partially covering his mid-section.
