Paris: Chez les Marchandes de Nouveautés. Box. . Very Good. Scarce, with only known copy at the Morgan Library. (Only copy recorded on OCLC First Search.) N.d., circa 1820. With 32 cards, half with a question (Demande), half with an answer (Reponse), all with hand-colored illustrations. The "Demande" cards all depict Biedermeier period domestic scenes, the "Reponse" cards are of objects, each card showing an assortment of objects akin to a trophy. The hand-coloring is across-the-board rich and exquisite. Typical questions are such things as what is the purpose of reading, or is it essential to know arithmetic, with the answers appropriately didactic and comparatively terse. Box, with band of foil perimeter to lid paper pastedown, measures 12 by 16 cm, and is 2 cm thick. Cards are 7 by 11 cm. Condition: light soiling to pictorial pastedown of lid, with scattered minor soil on cards. Box survives with full integrity, and the whole package remains most attractive.
