The Scientific American was begun in 1845 as a monthly issued periodical. Mo issues featured architectural designs for houses and commercial structures wi appropriate building and design advertisements, but there were several which also focused just on the automobile which we have here. This issue, Vol. CXV no. 1 for January 1, 1917 "Nineteenth Annual Motor Number" includes articles "Ancestors of the Automobile," "The Elusive Measuring Pump; How the purchaser of Gasoline may be protected against Intentional and Unintentional Fraud," an "Federal Aid in Fighting Mud; a Hundred and Fifty Million Dollars for Good Ro and How it will be Spent." It has a brightly colored chromolithographic cove featuring an allegory "A graphical representation of the magnitude of the automobile industry" showing oversized cars overshadowing a major city and th Woolworth Building. The articles inside are about automobiles, the industry the newest advancements and features richly illustrated with black-and-white photographs. (Inventory #: 40676)
