Webster made history as one of the first women to hold public elected office as part of the London School Board (1879-1882); during the campaign, she faced intense pressure to step down from men who accused her of "selfish ambition" and of impeding the work that could only be done effectively by men. She won this seat and two more subsequent elections. Webster viewed education as the key to women's progress and consistently worked for the educational rights of women and girls. Slight sunning to spine and light foxing to end papers. In very good condition.
