Boston: Privately Printed, 1906. First Edition. Hardcover. Good. 12mo. [1], iv, 288 pages. Frontispiece portrait of James Savage. Dark green cloth hardcover with gilt title on the front cover and spine. Gilt top edge. Decorative end sheets. Cloth is chipped head and base of the spine with light wear to the extremities. The rear hinge is broken. Slight lean to the binding. This copy is inscribed by the editor Emma Rogers on the blank recto of the frontispiece - "Mrs Julia Ward Howe affectionate regards of Emma Rogers." Below the inscription is the name M. H. Elliot. Emma Rogers was the daughter of James Savage (1784-1873). From wikipedia: James Savage was an American banker and author. He was one of the founding fathers of Provident Institution for Savings in the Town of Boston established in 1816 as the first chartered savings bank in the United States. James was also well known for his research as an antiquary and as author of A Genealogical Dictionary of the First Settlers of New England. He was instrumental in helping his son-in-law, William Barton Rogers, establish MIT and helping his cousin, Frederic Tudor, establish the ice trade in the West Indies, among many other ventures. Also from wikipedia: Julia Ward Howe (1819 - 1910) was an American poet and author, known for writing "The Battle Hymn of the Republic" and the original 1870 pacifist Mother's Day Proclamation. She was also an advocate for abolitionism and a social activist, particularly for women's suffrage.
