The authors present a collection of writings by German writers from the midle of the 18th century to the present to give readers a better undertanding of the German thought and attitudes: "a kaleidoscopic view of the life and ideals of this people through the eyes of their countrymen." In the letter, Powell complains of the reception to his piece: "The Long Roll on the Rhine", noting that "The Jews were determined that the American public should not be permitted to hear the German side of the question. They not only assailed my veracity but claimed that I was a paid propagandist." Indded, the short piece in this work offers praise for the Nazis while condemning their treatment of their Jewish citizens.
