Based on, and incorporating music from, the 1983 opera by composer Engelbert Humperdinck, with a libretto by his sister Adelhied Wette, itself based on the German fairy tale first published in 1812 in "Grimm's Fairy Tales." Produced by Michael Myerberg at his New York studio and originally released independently before being picked up by RKO for a Christmas 1954 release nationally, the film would go on to become a staple of holiday viewing.
