WILLIAM J. BURNS (1860-1932). Burns was a Secret Service agent, law enforcement official and true crime author. He started the famous Burns Detective Agency and was head of the Bureau of Investigation from August 22, 1921 to June 14, 1924.TLS. 1pg. 8 x 10. December 7, 1921. Washington. A typed letter signed Wm J Burns on Department of Justice Bureau of Investigation letterhead. He wrote to Louis J. Luxembourg of Boston: concerning your application for position as Special Agent in this Bureau. In reply you are advised that your letter will be placed in your personnel file for consideration in connection with any future appointments which may be madethe photograph enclosed with your application be returned to you, you are advised that such photographs become a part of your file and cannot be returned unless absolutely necessary. The letter has light faults and two mailing folds. As Burns was the Director for less than three years, his letters are probably scarce.
