One of a number of manuals published for the Union Army to assist the transition of civilians to military life and responsibilities. It explains essential field craft and survival skills to an ignorant field force thereby increasing their effectiveness. Printed early in the conflict few of these manuals survived even moderate use. The manual offered here was one of a handful of such publications available at the outbreak of the war. Sabin #8888 (citing the Confederate edition); Parrish #4746 - noting that the Confederate edition was possibly printed before VA secession; absent from Goodspeed #601 and Eberstadt.
