By Hilton, William (the younger) - WATERCOLOR PORTRAIT
ca1820. As accomplished.. Fine.. Watercolor portrait meas. appx. 185 x 148 mm.. It is on a stiff paper board.

Sir Thomas Gresham was councillor, and financier in Elizabethan England as well as the founder of the Royal Exchange. Numerous portraits exist. Hilton made this skillful and appealing watercolor from the attributed Holbein portrait in the Mercers' Company Hall in London. It was once part of the Elhanan Bicknell collection (sold by Christies in a named sale in April of 1863). The watercolor was framed (since removed and retained) and a thin, solid oak board (retained) once served as a seal to the back of the frame. The board has two labels affixed to it. One label appears to be an original gum label with 5 handwritten lines identifying the work and artist. The second is a twentieth century typed label assigning a registration number and identifying the portrait. HIlton was best known for his historically themed works and came from that British school of "effortless" watercolorists at the end of the 18th century. He was a friend of Keats and is also known for the portrait of him. DNB VIII, 585-596; DNB IX, 887-888 (Hilton).
