Gellert, now forgotten despite a critical edition of his works as late as 1989, was the author of a watershed novel (Leben der Schwedischen Gräfinn ...., 1747) in Germany. The author feels the epistolary format provides latitude for "direct" expression of thoughts and is one that is preferred by women and a younger audience.
