Demobilized at the end of the Civil War, Private Samuel W. Dogan served under Captain Timothy J. Sheehan in the Company C of the 5th Minnesota Infantry and took part of several deciding battles of the Civil War, including the Siege of Vicksburg, the Battle of Nashville, the Siege of Spanish Fort and Fort Blakely in Alabama, and the Battle of Tupelo in Missouri.
