Uniform edition; 8 3/4 x 5 3/4; pp. [2], 3-261, [11] and [3], 4-244, [12] respectively; pictorial leatherette in blue and black, decorated in white; illustrated with photographs; minor age-toning and wear; in near fine condition."The Black Book of Soviet Jewry," or just "The Black Book" was first written in 1944 by revolutionary, journalist, and historian Ilia Erenburg (1891 - 1967) and author and journalist Vasilii Grossman (1905 - 1964), in collaboration with the Soviet Jewish Anti-Fascist Committee (JAC) and members of the American Jewish community - to document antisemitic crimes of the Holocaust. The book was denounced as anti-Soviet and banned from publication in Russia. The authors recreated it in Yiddish, copies of the manuscript were smuggled to the US, Israel, and Romania, and parts of it published. A complete Russian-language edition was published for the first time in 1980 in Jerusalem and in 1991 in Ukraine.
