LADY HOLLYHOCK AND HER FRIENDS

  • New York: The Baker & Taylor Company, 1906
By Walker, Margaret Coulson; Hunt, Mary Isabel
New York: The Baker & Taylor Company, 1906. First edition. Very good plus.. Unusually charming (and sometimes slightly surreal) book of ideas for toys made from everyday objects and food, accompanied by stories and poems. Features ideas for dolls made out of all sorts of fruits, vegetables, fibers, and household objects, as well as animal favorites like the Lemon Pig. Some of the dolls are racial caricatures with accompanying insensitive terminology. Overall, a clever production and interesting Progressive Era example of the genre of children's activity books using common items. 9'' x 6.75''. Original tan publisher's cloth binding with black, green, and red stamped titles and designs. Full-page black-and-white frontispiece with 14 full-page color plates and numerous black-and-white illustrations of varying sized throughout. 154 pages. Binding very lightly soiled, spine ends mildly bumped. Occasional light soil; some small closed tears to page edges. Sound and bright.
