( July, 1935) · Amsterdam
by Schwimmer-Vigeveno, A.
EIGHTEEN JEWISH SONGS ABOUT LIFE IN PALESTINE AND THE JEWISH HOLIDAYS - Including Purim, Chanukah, Simchat Torah, and the Sabbath. B/W Illustrations by ARTHUR BRYKS- a Polish Hasidic Painter and Illustrator.
THIS BOOK done in 1935 was to encourage the children of Holland (and their parents) to make Aliyah. On page 1 - there is a Photographic Sepia Print Tipped-In of 2 boys who made Aliyah. One could imagine the urgency in 1935 to reach Palestine - away from ominous times in wretched Europe. I would imagine not many of these books survived unless one did leave.
The songs are by various composers - one of which is Chaim N. Bialik, a famous Jewish Poet who wrote in Hebrew and Yiddish. He is known as the National Poet of Israel. (He is actress Mayim Bialik's uncle.) The lyrics are in Dutch with a Hebrew translation. Music edited by Austrian-Jewish composer Paul Pella. Introduction by A. Schwimmer-Vigeveno.
The book is 4to oblong with a blue cloth spine and a Beautiful and Striking Color Pictorial Label. The book is in very good conditon - clean & tight - with only a few small spots at the top of the back cover near spine. There is a water drop at the very top also near spine - and the top of spine shows light water staining. Still a VG copy.
