1792 · London
by [Langworthy, Edward]
London: Printed for J.S. Jorda, 1792. [iii]-xii,439pp. Lacks half title. 19th-century three-quarter polished calf and cloth boards, spine richly gilt in compartments with brown morocco label. Light wear and soiling to boards. Occasional light soiling and foxing throughout. A few marginal annotations in a contemporary hand. Very good. Partially untrimmed. First edition, published the same year as the Dublin and American editions. Howes notes that this account was "said to have been edited by Thomas Paine," working under the direction of Langworthy. Sabin is more vague: "Contains many curious particulars relating to the war between Great Britain and the Colonies. Published under the direction of Edward Langworthy, of Georgia." A controversial figure, the DAB calls Charles Lee "one of the most extraordinary and contradictory characters in American history." ESTC T146543. HOWES L83. SABIN 38903. LARNED 1411
