Quarto; in a modern binding of tan half-calf over marbled boards with a morocco label.~~Seventeenth century edition of this history of the Jews by Josephus, translated by Thomas Lodge. Certainly of interest is that Part I -- The Famous and Lamentable Works of Josephus --was printed for sale in the shop of Anne Hood in Dunstan's Church-year, in Fleet-Street (sadly there is some surface loss to this interesting bibliographical detail). With a separate title page for Part 2, The Lamentable and Tragical History...; imprint for Part 2 reads "Printed by J. L. for Abel Roper ... 1656." ~~Engraved headpieces, tailpieces, and initials. Collates complete; 2o: [par.]5 ([par.]5 = ‘[par.]3') A-V6 (V2 = ‘U2') 2A-2V6 (2B2 = ‘b2') 3A-3F6 3G8 3H-3V6 4A-4H6 4I-4K4 4L6 [$3 (-D1, 4I3, 4K3. +3G4) signed]; 429 leaves; [10], 554, [5] 556-812, [32] pp. Genealogical notes written on the reinforced verso of the title page, of the Igglesden family of Newenden, Kent. ~~There is significant surface wear to the title page and following leaf, with staining and some loss; title page and final leaf of the index reinforced with contemporary paper, likely the nineteenth century endpapers on which the genealogical notes were written, and title page additionally reinforced by a modern conservator. Loss to the top edge of the fourth leaf of the preliminaries; edge wear to the preliminaries; paper loss to the top corner of the final two signatures comprising the Table, just slightly affecting the text (4K2-4L6); scattered and minor ink staining, smudging, and the like, but with no foxing. Modern rebinding, in half brown leather over marbled paper boards, with a modern leather label on the spine [Note: an earlier -- contemporary? -- label is laid in].~~~~ (ESTC R10907; Wing (2nd ed.), J1076).
