New York: J.W. Bouton, 1879. Cloth over board. Very good +. [TRAVEL] [BOOKPLATE]. 8vo; 93pp; gilt-stamped blue cloth over beveled board, title to front cover and spine, pictorial stamped cover with boats at sea and cliffs; all edges gilt; brown endpapers; bookplate of Francis Whiting Halsey on front pastedown; 39 engraved illustrations with tissue guards including frontispiece and vignette; light shelf wear to boards, front hinge cracked but holding tight; very good plus. Delightful travel book with detailed and delicate engravings illustrating famous sights across Great Britain and France. Bookplate of Francis Whiting Halsey (1851-1919), a graduate of Cornell University, mounted on front pastedown. A journalist, editor and historian, Halsey worked for the Binghamton [NY] press, New York Tribune, New York Times, the Times Saturday Review of Books and Funk and Wagnalls. A small unsigned hand-written card is tucked into the front, "I thought you two might enjoy having this book around as it is such a pretty binding. Aunt Carrie gave it to me years ago and you see it once belonged to a lively collection. We know how Ruskin felt-didn't we?".
