1849. CRUIKSHANK, Percy. Hints to Emigrants. Or incidents in the emigration of John Smith of Smith-Town. 2 pp. text. Illustrated with wood engraved front wrapper printed on blue paper, followed by 9 wood engraved plates with smaller format proof versions of 6 of the images printed on chine, with two images per sheet loosely inserted. Oblong 8vo, 135 x 223 mm, bound in slightly a slightly later japonesque binding with elegant Japanese styled endpapers with cloud motif. London: J. Harwood, [1849]. First edition of a satirical pictorial commentary on emigration, by George Cruikshank's nephew. The series of excellently executed wood engravings humorously depicts the complications and dangers of a new life in what appears to be North America. The present copy is enhanced with inclusion of proofs on chine and it's intricate japonesque binding. Front joint rubbed, otherwise a bright fine copy. PROVENANCE: Albert Tissandier with his bookplate on the front paste-down.
