The story was initially published in 1946 as a three part serial in the pulp magazine Argosy under the name Rider from Nowhere. Schaefer revised and significantly expanded the work for the present book.
In 1953 Shane was adapted into a film of the same name starring Alan Ladd. Fine in Near Fine dust jacket.
