Shot under the working title El Weirdo present here, the film was eventually released as Bananas. The resulting film was only the second film written and directed by Woody Allen. It is a comedy about lovestruck New Yorker Woody Allen who travels to a small Latin American country portrayed as a classic banana republic and Allen becomes a rebel involved in a revolution. One of Allen’s great early comedies, in the year 2000, the American Film Institute chose the film as number 69 in their list of classic film comedies entitled “100 Years...100 Laughs”.
