Annie Lee Moss, an African-American, served as a clerk with the U.S. Army Signal Corps was suspended from the Army after Senator Joseph McCarthy accused her of being a member of the American Communist Party. The image depicts Mrs. Annie Lee Moss, dressed in a fur coat and wide-brimmed hat, smiling, facing the camera, shown from the waist up.
