Basis for the 1957 film directed by Fred Zinnemann and featuring Don Murray, Eva Marie Saint, and Anthony Franciosa (who was nominated for a best Actor Oscar, but lost to Alec Guiness in *The Bridge on the River Kwai*); also remade for television in 1968 with Sandy Dennis, Michael Parks, and Peter Falk. Perhaps more surprisingly, the author was nominated for a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his role as Frankie Pentangeli in *The Godfather: Part II*.
