INSCRIBED on title-page of Volume One ("For Ray Smith -- one very heavy book -- Best -- B. W. Gerdts"). Ray is mentioned in the Acknowledgements as Curator of the John Slade Ely House in New Haven but his more important contribution to this massive work was as R. W. Smith, Bookseller since it was Ray in that role who (truncated) located and supplied Gerdts with a large number of the really hard-to-find items on regional art and artists.
