Rutkow describes this book as the best and most vivid account of early 19th century American military life. The chapters on surgery are invaluable for the first hand descriptions of the treatment of wounds. Mann was an army surgeon during the War of 1812. The book offered here is a memoir of his experiences. The sections dealing with military hospitals are especially informative about techniques and care of the wounded.
