One of a number of well illustrated guides to the famous tunnel beneath the Thames River. The text, written by the tunnel’s designer and engineer Sir Marc Isambard Brunel, includes a brief history of the Thames Tunnel project from its inception in 1824 together with detailed descriptions of the innovative tunneling techniques employed on its construction (as of 1839 appx. 350 feet remained to be excavated). The engraved and aquatint plates include a folding longitudinal plan showing the tunnel, a tinted aquatint of the gas-lit western archway, and a folding plate with a fine engraved isometric view of a section of the tunneling shield by Beamish.
