Lighter's dictionary, the first of its kind devoted to American slang, was projected to run to four volumes, but the project was terminated by Random House in 1997 after only the first two volumes had been published. As of 2022, the final two volumes have yet to be published, though Oxford University Press has reputedly taken on responsibility for completing the work.
