London: Cadell and Davies, 1817. First edition. 2 volumes. Half polished calf, marbled paper boards. Engraved frontispiece of the author. Hinges rubbed and partially cracked ( but firm), wear to edges, else a very good set.
Bowdler was called to the bar in 1805 but ill-health required him to spend time on the continent, where he composed these letters, poetry and translations. He died in 1815, His father caused this edition to be published as a memoir. His journal entries as her epublished provide a valuable insight to the Continent in the first few years of the 19th century, but it is essentially an 1810 Grand Tour.
