"In late July, 1864, four gentlemen from Georgia decided to make one last, desperate attempt to find gold in the foothills of the Continental Divide near Prickly Pear Creek. Their efforts were successful and the 'Last Chance' camp was established. By early fall it was decided that 'Last Chance' was not a suitable name for the rapidly growing camp. After much debate and many possibilities, 'Helena' was decided upon - named after the hometown of one of the organizers, John Sommerville from Helena, Minnesota.
