Meriden, Connecticut: Meriden Public Library, 1976-1999. Fine.. A grouping of six (6) items related to Meriden Public Library's relationship to celebrated children's author and Meriden native Tomie de Paola (1934-2020), collected by Marion Cook, one of the librarians in Meriden who worked with him most closely. Materials include printed greeting cards, correspondence, exhibition brochures, and a booklet produced for the Library's 1985 celebration presented to Cook from de Paola himself. The six items are:
Illustrated "Love Peace & Joy" Christmas card (5.5" by 4.25") addressed to Marion Cook signed and addressed in ink by Tomie de Paola in original envelope. Postmarked December 1976.
Three (3) illustrated Christmas cards featuring artwork by Tomie de Paola. Whitebird, Inc., 1985. All are unused, and have a reproduction of artist's signature to second leaf verso. Each bifolium card measures 7" by 5", and is housed in original blank envelope measuring 7.25" by 5.25".
"Tomie de Paola Celebration". Meriden: Meriden Public Library, 1985. Illustrated event and exhibition booklet marking the Library's celebration of de Paola's work in 1985. Includes schedule of events, brief autobiography and bibliography, acknowledgments, and many photos of de Paola and his creations. Presentation inscription from Tomie de Paola to Marion Cook on verso of upper wrapper. Folio (11" by 8.75"), stapled in original illustrated wrappers.
Three (3) illustrated Christmas cards featuring artwork by Tomie de Paola. Whitebird, Inc., 1991. Each has been inscribed in ink inside by Marcia Trotta (?), including one to Cook. Each bifolium card measures 7" by 5".
"A View from Yankee Barn" Yankee Barn Homeowners Newsletter Vol. 21, No. 2, 1990s. Features lengthy feature article with photographs of Tomie de Paola's home and studio. Ink inscription to upper right-hand corner of first leaf ("Marion-- thought you'd be interested."). Bifolium (11" by 8.5").
Two (2) copies of exhibition catalog "The Heart of the Whitebird: The Art of Tomie de Paola. Storrs: The William Benton Museum of Art, 1999. Each tri-fold card measures 8.5" by 8" folded, and features photos of de Paola's life and information about his career. (Inventory #: 20206492)
